Henna is an all natural paste that temporarily stains the skin. It lasts for about two weeks. It's made with henna, lemon juice, cajeput essential oil, and lemongrass and sweet orange essential oils. If you are allergic to fave beans, moth balls, citrus, or have a G6PD deficiency, do not use henna.
1.) Let the paste dry! It is very important that you don't bump, brush, or get the paste wet again. Generally, it takes about 10-20 minutes to dry depending on the design. Also, keep in mind that some parts may be dry while others are not fully dry yet. Be patient and be careful.
2.) Leave henna paste on as long as possible. The longer the better. I understand this can be difficult and it may start to flake, but that's okay. Leave as much on for as long as possible. If you must take it off, please wait 2 hours after all the henna dries.
3.) Don't use water to wash away the remaining henna paste. Just brush it off. If it's really stubborn, or you're having trouble removing the paste, using olive oil on the area makes it easier.
4.) When showering or being in water, you can use a Henna Balm like the ones sold at artisticadornment.com. Natural lotions may work, but I've never tried it.
Read my blogpost, The Henna Stain for more information about the stain and some wonderful reading material on making your henna last.
